Creativity and Citizenship

At all stages, students are involved in co-curricular activities calling for creativity and engagement. As they become older, some of these activities become part of the High School Diploma requirement. These activities might include sports, music, theater or dance, practiced outside school at a competitive or professional level, but in most cases they involve school-based social engagement, social entrepreneurship or community-building initiatives, such as:

  • The race against hunger (course contre la faim): Each year, all students from 6th through 10th grade and their teachers take part in this world-wide fundraising event for the benefit of the global Action contre la faim charity. Our School is the largest school contributor to this event.
  • Community service partnership with the Jeanne Garnier hospice and the Aurélie Jousset retirement home. Students dedicate time to visit, read to, or sing or perform for residents.
  • Nepal, Inc. (New Educational Project for Active Learning): Launched by Lille students to help develop the rural community of Nagarkot, this project focuses on health and development. Twenty-two of our students were building a school there when the April 25th 2015 Earthquake struck. None of the students were hurt, but the school was destroyed and, returning from this transforming experience, the students established Thanks-a-Million to help the community. They produced a film and held fundraising events to help the village and restore the school.
  • Not everything has to be serious: student-lead and student-run, the spring Fashion Show has become a celebrated tradition, bringing together Middle School and Upper School students who design and model their creations and prepare the show.

In 9th through 12th grade, the Jeannine Manuel Awards recognize those students who have not only distinguished themselves academically, but also exemplified the spirit of the School through their outstanding contribution to the School community or society at large.
